In ancient China, a whole day was divided into 12 periods. Each period is corresponding to one meridian of your body. The Meridian system is a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) about a path through which the life-energy known as “qi” flows. The Meridians interact with internal organs. Each Meridian has a most active period in a day. Following the natural rule of your body will promote your health.
- 23:00 – 1:00 Meridian of Gallbladder: Deep sleep!
The gallbladder metabolize actively at this time. When you fall asleep deeply in this period, gallbladder can then focus on metabolizing. Also in this period, our heart function is the weakest. Always prepare medicines to save your life if you have heart disease.
- 1:00 – 3:00 Meridian of Liver: Deeper sleep!
This is the best time of the day for our liver to recover itself. The portion of the old blood will be replaced by the new blood in this period. Deeper sleep at this period can give our liver full energy. Keeping awake in this period will drain the liver’s energy for supporting our activities. The liver’s metabolism cannot be carried out efficiently and may cause health problem.
- 3:00 – 5:00: Meridian of Lung
This is the period when Yin switches to Yang. Our bodies get into the time of Yang flourishing and Yin diminishing. Meridian of Lung gets very active at this period. The blood is delivered to lung, then to the body. In this period, it is recommended to do more breathing exercises. The medicines for lung diseases or asthma taken in this period will give more effective results.
- 5:00 – 7:00 Meridian of Large Intestine: Defecation!
In this period, meridian of large intestine is very active. The large intestine absorbs the nutrients and water, and defecate the waste. Having a cup of water will help the bowl movement.
- 7:00 – 9:00 Meridian of Stomach: Do not forget the breakfast!
Stomach secretes more gastric at this time. Skip breakfast will create chances of gastric ulcer, gastritis, duodenitis, or cholecystitis!
- 9:00 – 11:00 Meridian of Spleen: Drink more water!
Meridian of Spleen is related to digestion, absorption and excretion. Porridge made with barley, red bean and yam can help strengthen the function of spleen. You need drink more water in this period. Drink 2000ml water a day, that’s about 5 bottles of water. Don’t drink any soft drinks.
- 11:00 – 13:00 Meridian of Heart: Take a break.
Heart promotes blood circulation for our body. If we can take a nap in this period to give our heart a rest, we will feel full of energy from afternoon till the night. Note: A nap should not be longer than half an hour to prevent insomnia at night
- 13:00 – 15:00 Meridian of Small Intestine
Small intestine absorbs more nutrients in this period of time. So it’s better to have lunch before 1:00 pm.
- 15:00 – 17:00 Meridian of Bladder: Urinate!
The Bladder drains the waste out of the body. In this period, we should drink more water and should not hold the full bladder to prevent urinary retention.
- 17:00 – 19:00 Meridian of Kidney
Kidney is the energy of reproduction and the internal organs. After the detoxification during the last period, kidney starts to contain energy. This is man’s time. To someone who has problem of his/her kidney, it would be more effective if they have a massage of the meridian of kidney at this time.
- 19:00 – 21:00 Meridian of Pericardium
At this time, we should create a comfortable condition for sleeping and make your mind peaceful.
- 21:00 – 23:00 Meridian of San Jiao: Bed time!
This is the time that our Meridian of San Jiao functioning actively. It hosts all the air and channels of our body. Meridian of San Jiao connects all the meridians at this period of time, and we need to rest.
